WILL YOUNG // LOSING MYSELF

Will Young continues in a vein of collaboration with top promo directors with this stylish and well executed promo for latest track ‘Losing Myself’, delivered by Partizan director Henry Schofield.

The promo follows Will Young as he prepares for his day, the sense of losing himself  is personified by multiple incarnations of Will appearing around him throughout his morning routine. Will’s multiple alter egos were choreographed over two days prior to the shoot to create the neat repetitive actions, building to Will properly losing himself in the middle eight.

The promo was shot on Alexa with colourist Simone Grattarola grading at Rushes. VFX artists Leo Weston with Brian Carbin at Rushes created all the transitions to produce a seamless flow of the camera as it moves between vignettes. The promo was edited by James Rose at Cut and Run and produced by Louise Gagen for Partizan.

JACOB SUTTON’S L.E.D SURFER

A Night-time Snowboarding Short Lights Up the Last of the Winter Snow

Fashion photographer and filmmaker Jacob Sutton swaps the studio for the slopes of Tignes in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France, with a luminous after hours short starring Artec pro snowboarder William Hughes. The electrifying film sees Hughes light up the snow-covered French hills in a bespoke L.E.D.-enveloped suit courtesy of designer and electronics whizz John Spatcher. “I was really drawn to the idea of a lone character made of light surfing through darkness,” says Sutton of his costume choice. “I’ve always been excited by unusual ways of lighting things, so it seemed like an exciting idea to make the subject of the film the only light source.”

Sutton, who has created work for the likes of Hermès, Burberry and The New York Times, spent three nights on a skidoo with his trusty Red Epic camera at temperatures of -25C to snap Hughes carving effortlessly through the deep snow, even enlisting his own father to help maintain the temperamental suit throughout the demanding shoot. “Filming in the suit was the most surreal thing I’ve done in 20 years of snowboarding,” says Hughes of the charged salopettes. “Luckily there was plenty of vin rouge to keep me warm, and Jacob’s enthusiasm kept everyone going through the cold nights.”

The film was edited by Jacob Sutton on Final Cut Pro in his studio and graded by Rushes colourist Denny Cooper from the 4K files. Rushes Glenn Cone cleaned up elements prior to Jacob adding the final titles.

ALL THE YOUNG // THE HORIZON

All the Young are hallowed for leading the new wave of Northern guitar based Brit pop that walks in the footsteps of bands like Oasis. Director Andy Morahan elects to reflect their strong northern roots by selecting the Pennines as the backdrop to shoot this promo for there latest single ‘The Horizon’.

Combining motion control time lapse scenes of the Northern hilltops with a green screen performance captured on Red, intercut with high speed phantom footage. Spencer Ferszt at Marshall Street editors honed the cut prior to Rushes Simone Grattarola applying his colour grading skills to unify some great sequences from different camera formats.

Rushes VFX artists James Dooley and Andy Barnard composited the multiple green screen shots with the timelapse footage, integrating the reactive light changes to make everything sit cohesively. Simone Grattarola then used Resolve with a matte pass to create a final integration of all passes.
